Rotating without losing quality

Quarter turns (90°, 180°, 270°) simply move pixels, so nothing is lost. A custom angle has to redraw the picture, which softens fine detail very slightly and adds empty corners, so the canvas is enlarged to keep the whole image visible.

Transparency and format

PNG and WebP files keep their transparent areas, including the corners created by a custom angle. JPG has no transparency, so those corners are filled with white and the file is saved as JPG again.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The picture is decoded and redrawn in your browser, so it never leaves your device.

Does rotating reduce quality?

90, 180 and 270 degree turns are lossless in terms of pixels. Other angles resample the image, which very slightly softens fine detail.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes for PNG and WebP. JPG cannot store transparency, so any empty corners are filled with white.

Can I combine rotation and flipping?

Yes. Flips are applied together with the rotation in a single pass, so you can mirror and turn at the same time.
