Watermarking photos well

A watermark should be readable but not ruin the picture. A bottom corner at around 40–60% opacity works for most photos; a large, rotated, low-opacity mark across the centre is harder to crop out when you are sharing proofs or previews.

Size and resolution

The text size is a percentage of the image's shortest side, so the same setting looks consistent whether the photo is a small thumbnail or a full-resolution camera file. The image itself is never resized.
