Why convert a PDF to grayscale?

Black-and-white documents print more cheaply on office printers, avoid unexpected colour charges at print shops, and are often required for submissions and archives. Removing colour can also make a heavily designed document easier to read.

How it works

Every page is rendered at high resolution, each pixel is converted using the standard luminance formula (0.299 red + 0.587 green + 0.114 blue), and the result is placed back into a new PDF at the original page size. Because pages become images, text is no longer selectable in the converted file — keep your original if you need searchable text.
