Why add page numbers to a PDF?

Numbered pages make printed reports, contracts, theses and handouts easy to reference and reassemble. Because the numbers are drawn as real text into the document, they stay in place when the file is printed, emailed or archived.

Tips

  • Use a starting number other than 1 when a cover page or preface should not be counted.
  • Choose “Selected pages” with a range such as 3-20 to skip front matter.
  • Bottom-centre is the safest position for most documents, as it rarely overlaps content.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened, edited and saved entirely in your browser, so it never leaves your device.

Can I start numbering from a different page?

Yes. Switch to “Selected pages” and enter a range such as 3-20, then set the starting number you want printed on the first of those pages.

Will the numbers cover my content?

The number is drawn in the page margin, about 28 points from the edge. If your layout uses very small margins, try the opposite position or a smaller font size.

Can I remove page numbers later?

The numbers become part of the page content, so keep your original file if you might need an unnumbered version.
