How QR codes store information

A QR code is a grid of black and white modules that encodes plain text. Scanners read that text and act on it based on a prefix: https:// opens a link, mailto: starts an email, tel: dials a number, WIFI: joins a network and BEGIN:VCARD saves a contact. This generator builds the correct prefix for you from the fields you fill in.

Choosing an error correction level

Error correction adds redundancy so a damaged or partly covered code still scans. Low recovers about 7% of the data and keeps the pattern simple; High recovers around 30% but makes the grid denser. Use Medium for screens and printed flyers, and High if the code will be placed on a sticker, a window, or anywhere it may get scuffed.

Printing tips

• Keep the quiet zone — a margin of at least two modules — or scanners may fail to lock on.
• Maintain strong contrast: dark foreground on a light background scans far better than the reverse.
• Download the SVG for print so the code stays sharp at any size.
• Print at least 2 cm across for close scanning, and larger for posters read from a distance.

Wi-Fi QR codes

A Wi-Fi code carries the network name, the security type and the password in plain text. Anyone who scans it can join the network, so treat a printed code the same way you would treat the password itself, and use a guest network where possible.
