What this word counter measures

Counts update on every keystroke, so you can write straight into the box or paste a draft and immediately see whether it fits a limit. Words are detected by letters and digits, which means accented, Cyrillic, Greek, and other non-Latin alphabets are counted correctly, and hyphenated words like state-of-the-art count as one word.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time uses 225 words per minute, an average silent reading speed for everyday prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, close to a comfortable presentation pace — handy for scripts, talks, and video voiceovers.

Common limits to write against

• Meta description: around 155 characters.
• Tweet / post: 280 characters.
• Blog article: 1,000–2,000 words, roughly 5–9 minutes of reading.
• Five-minute talk: about 650 spoken words.

Keyboard friendly

Tab moves between the text box and each button, Enter or Space activates them, and standard Ctrl/Cmd + V pasting works directly in the text box.
