How appliance running cost is calculated

Energy in kilowatt-hours is watts × hours ÷ 1000. A 1500 W air conditioner running 6 hours a day uses 9 kWh daily, 270 kWh over 30 days, and at 0.22 per kWh costs 59.40 a month.

Typical appliance wattages

• LED bulb: 9–12 W
• Refrigerator: 100–250 W (running much of the day)
• Washing machine: 500–1000 W per cycle
• Air conditioner: 900–2000 W
• Electric kettle: 1800–2200 W for a few minutes

Cutting running costs

The biggest savings usually come from high-wattage devices used for long periods. Reducing air-conditioning hours, washing at lower temperatures and switching lights to LED all reduce the kWh total directly.
