How to calculate a tip

The tip amount is bill × percentage ÷ 100. On a 64.00 bill, a 15% tip is 9.60, making the total 73.60. Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people to split it fairly.

Common tipping percentages

• 10% — acceptable service or counter service.
• 15–18% — the standard range for sit-down restaurants in many countries.
• 20%+ — great service, or where higher tipping is customary.

Splitting the bill

When dining as a group, split the total including the tip — not just the bill — so everyone pays their fair share. Rounding the total up makes cash payments easier and adds a small extra thank-you for the staff.
