Why time zone conversion is trickier than adding hours

A city’s offset from UTC is not fixed. Around half the world shifts its clocks for daylight saving, and the switch dates differ by country. London is UTC+00:00 in January but UTC+01:00 in July, while Kuala Lumpur stays at UTC+08:00 all year. That means the gap between two cities can change by an hour twice a year — which is why the conversion above is always calculated for the exact date you pick rather than for today.

Reading the result

• Offset — how far each zone sits from UTC on that date, for example UTC+08:00.
• Zone name — the short abbreviation in force, such as GMT, BST, EST or EDT.
• Date change — when the converted time lands on the previous or next day, the result says so explicitly.

Scheduling across regions

For a call between Kuala Lumpur and New York the gap is 12 or 13 hours depending on US daylight saving, so a 9:00 morning meeting in Malaysia falls the previous evening in New York. Convert the specific date of the meeting, not a typical day, and share the result with both the time and the date.
